Community Living
Expanding Access to Recreation and Social/Cultural Activities
The purpose of this project is to expand opportunities for integrated
recreational, social and cultural activities in Maine for people with
disabilities by providing information to programs and establishments to
raise their awareness and their level of program and facility accessibility
(e.g., development of a resource guide for fitness facility managers)
and by informing people with disabilities about accessible location and
activities in Maine (e.g., replication of low-cost electronic calendar).
CMS has provided funding for this 3-year project under the 2001 Real Choices
Systems Change grant solicitation.

Making Connections:
A Manual for Developing and
Operating an Electronic Calendar of Accessible Events and Activities
in Your Community
The Access to Recreation project goals included an activity to replicate
Portland Connections, a model calendar of low-cost events, in three
communities in Maine. The project staff met with Portland Connections
staff to learn about the history and operation of the calendar. The
manual was written as a guide to support the replication of Portland
Connections for the grant goals and for future calendars that can be
developed after the grant is completed. It is available in alternative
formats and includes a CD with templates for use by calendar staff
- or you many download the PDF versions here: manual, calendar
survey template, calendar
template, comment
card template, icon
template, keyword
template. To access the replicated low-cost electronic calendar
created by the Maine Parent Federation, go to http://www.linkmaine.org and click on "Recreation Station".
Expanding
Access to Recreation in Maine for People with Disabilities: A
Report of Findings from a Focus Group with Fitness Facilities The Access to Recreation project conducted a focus group in
February 2003 to collect information from a representative group of
facilities regarding the utilization of fitness facilities by people
with disabilities to determine facilities' interests in expanding access;
their resource needs to support expansion; and the preferred methodology
for staff to access resource information. This is a report about our
findings.
Self-Assessment Survey for Accessibility
The project worked with the Committee for Accessible Leisure, Arts
and Recreation on the development of the self-assessment survey tool
to help facilities or programs evaluate accessibility for people
with disabilities. To download a copy of this tool, go to http://www.vsartsmaine.org/accme.htm and click on "Self-Assessment
Survey for Accessibility".
