This site is intended for the members of the Maine’s Health Workforce Forum to use as a reference and convenient location to access documents, articles and resources related to the 2008 meetings. The Health Workforce Forum is a coalition of health and long-term care employers, educators, health professionals and their representative organizations and the Maine Departments of Labor and Health and Human Services assembled to address Maine’s health care workforce issues. Established in 2005 by a legislated initiative (see history, below), the Forum is meeting to review the Health Occupations Report, a compilation of data on the workforce prepared by the Department of Labor in conjunction with the Office of Data Research and Vital Statistics. The first Health Occupations Report was published in January 2007 and the Forum as met three times to review and discuss the data, provide input into the report recommendations. The Forum is being reconvened in Summer 2008 to review its recommendations, discuss current workforce issues and identify an action plan for presenting the information.
History The Health Workforce Forum was established in 2005 with the 122nd Legislature and Governor’s approval of L.D. 892 "An Act To Ensure an Adequate Supply of a Skilled Health Care Workforce" and the enactment of Public Law Chapter 327. The law established the Health Occupations Report and Forum activities: the Maine Departments of Labor Beginning in 2006, the Department of Labor, in conjunction with the Office of Health Data and Program Management's Office of Data, Research and Vital Statistics, shall compile and annually update a health care occupations report to be completed and presented to the health workforce forum established in section 257 shall convene at least once annually a health workforce forum to review the report developed under section 256 and discuss health care workforce issues. The forum must include representatives of health professionals, licensing boards, employers, health education programs and the Department of Labor.
Maine AHEC Network The Maine AHEC Network has been working since 1985 to address health professional workforce shortages, especially for primary care providers, in Maine’s rural and underserved areas. http://www.une.edu/com/ahec/
Maine Health Data Organization MHDO was established by the Maine Legislature in 1996 as an independent executive agency to collect clinical and financial health care information and to exercise responsible stewardship in making this information accessible to the public.
